Continuous Improvement group

About

The Continuous Improvement (or CI) group is comprised of representatives from the School that meet regularly to discuss ideas and review progress on initiatives that are designed to make improvements to the way work is carried out in the School or to enhance staff’s working experience. Continuous improvement ideas can be submitted by anyone in the organisation and the group will evaluate whether they represent small changes that will result in an improvement.

Membership

The Continuous Improvement Group aspires to be comprised of a representative from each professional services team and a minimum of one academic member of staff. Membership of the group is voluntary.

Vision

We want to become an organisation that learns from its experiences and from others’, building on the lessons of successes and failures to improve our work environment and performance month-on-month and year-on-year.

Aims

  • To make incremental improvements to services through ideas generated, shared and implemented by all staff.
  • To make better use of our own and others’ expertise.
  • To create an environment in which continuous improvement is a significant  influence on our work, so that over time it becomes an integral and indispensable part of it.
  • Strengthen managers’ commitment to improve what we do and how we do it.
  • Help staff to feel empowered to suggest and pursue potential improvements.
  • Put systems in place to capture learning, building on the experience of systems already operating in some parts of the organisation, and require that decisions are based on it (drawing on evidence both of what does and what does not work)
  • Find ways of measuring and explaining the benefits of continuous improvement and sharing lessons learnt.

Roles and responsibilities

Every member of staff is responsible for learning, and for contributing to continuous improvement.

Meetings and Records of Meetings

  • Meetings are held fortnightly. Meeting objectives are to review new submitted ideas for approval and allocation to appropriate staff. A review of the progress of ongoing projects will also be undertaken.
  • A review of the School survey will be completed every 6 months, to help reflect on the implementation of the School Core Values.

Core Values

The group has developed 5 core values that underpin the work that the group does and communicate the values that we aspire to as a work culture.

We are a School who:

  • Listens and cares
  • Encourages and values contribution
  • Communicates openly and respectfully
  • Trusts and helps each other
  • Supports and encourages development
