Students should also refer to advice for students exiting to Edinburgh
Students should note that a summer placement is a significant bonus when applying for residency. Prof Caldwell can assist and give advice about placements / internships / observerships in the University of Alberta or other Canadian academic or health institutions.
Canadian Medical Association (CMA)
Medical Council of Canada NAC OSCE
Students will be able to sit the MCCEE early enough to qualify for the appropriate diet of the required NAC OSCE. Students should plan to write the MCCEE in Programme Year 5 (Edinburgh’s year 4). As the MCCEE is essentially an information based rather than a clinical exam, it is not felt that the earlier sitting will be compromised by lack of experience.
MCCEE eligibility changes for international medical students
The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) has approved a change to the eligibility criteria for the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE). As of June 1, 2013, international medical students will be able to apply to take the MCCEE up to 20 months before their graduation date. This means international medical students will no longer need to be in the final clinical year of their medical school program to apply. The MCC is making this change to improve students’ access to the National Assessment Collaboration (NAC) examination. The NAC examination assesses international medical graduates and students for entry into residency. A pass result on the MCCEE is a requirement for application to the NAC examination. With the change in eligibility criteria, candidates will be able to access both examinations more easily within the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) application timeframe. link.
